Why this site exists
Crypto exchanges change fees, restrict countries, launch new products, and occasionally implode. Most "best exchange" content online is a rehash of press releases or a thinly-disguised pitch for whichever exchange pays the best referral rate. CryptoCompare is built to be the opposite: structured, data-first comparisons that treat you like someone who wants the truth, not a conversion.
We launched in 2026 with a simple goal — pull the real fee schedules, country restrictions, and product lineups for the major exchanges into one place and keep them current. We review exchanges the way a careful consumer would: cross-referencing published fee data, tracking reported incidents, and weighing trade-offs honestly.
How we rank exchanges
Our rankings are based on a weighted score across five dimensions. We publish the weights so you can decide whether our priorities match yours.
Maker/taker spot fees, derivative funding rates, volume-tier discounts, and native-token discounts. We favor exchanges with transparent schedules.
Operating history, proof-of-reserves publication, incident record, insurance, and custody arrangements. Older, clean-record exchanges score higher.
Which countries it serves legally. US-legal exchanges score higher for US audiences; jurisdiction matters for fund recoverability.
Spot pair count, derivatives, staking yields, fiat on-ramps, and advanced trading tools. Broader platforms score higher for versatile users.
Mobile app quality, customer support responsiveness, onboarding friction, and interface clarity for beginners.
Fee data is re-verified quarterly. Last full refresh was Q1 2026. Material events (incidents, regulations, product launches) trigger immediate updates.
Editorial standards
We hold ourselves to four rules:
- Affiliate links never influence rankings. We rank exchanges based on the methodology above, not payouts. An exchange we have no partnership with can rank #1, and exchanges we have partnerships with can rank last.
- Cons are as prominent as pros. Every review lists both, and we don't sanitize weaknesses. If an exchange has a history of account freezes, slow withdrawals, or a security incident, you'll see it.
- No sponsored rankings. We do not sell placement. Ever.
- We update when things change. Fees get raised. Countries get restricted. Exchanges launch or retire products. When material changes happen, we update — we don't leave stale data up because it's inconvenient.
